Early orthodontic treatment

At GG Orthodontics in Winchester, we offer early orthodontic treatment to children aged 6 to 10, also commonly referred to as Phase 1 treatment. It is beneficial to treat orthodontic issues early on when the teeth and jaws are still maturing.

Early orthodontic treatment

Early orthodontic treatment vs regular orthodontic treatment

Here are some differences between early orthodontic treatment and orthodontic treatment for older patients:

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment
  • Ages 6-10
  • Mixed dentition - the patient has both baby and permanent teeth
  • Bones are still growing
  • Treatment often consists of partial braces or aligners, and sometimes palatal expansion
Early orthodontic treatment vs regular orthodontic treatment
Phase 2 orthodontic treatment
  • Ages 11 and older
  • The patient has nearly all of their permanent teeth
  • More comprehensive treatment, including full braces or aligners
Phase 2 orthodontic treatment

Why might my child need phase 1 treatment?

Early orthodontic treatment can be used to create more space for emerging permanent teeth, to correct bite issues, to correct bad habits such as thumb sucking, and even to aid in the improvement of speech impediments.

Your child may need phase 1 treatment if they experience the early or late loss of baby teeth, have difficulty chewing or biting down, or have protruding or crowded teeth. Early treatment could help prevent the future need for tooth extraction or jaw surgery.
